Rotary International President-Elect
Kalyan Banerjee was born in 1942 in Kolkata. He graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1964, having studied in Vishwa Bharati, the school set up by Novel Laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore, and in Scindia School, Gwalior, earlier.
He is Director of United Phosphorus Limited, one of the largest manufacturers of agrochemicals in India & Uniphos Agro Industries Limited, and Chairman of United Phosphorus Bangladesh Limited.
He is settled in Vapi in Gujarat 160 kms north of Mumbai; and has contributed significantly to its development as one of the largest industrial estates in India helping to provide infrastructure for healthcare and education in this industrial town.
Kalyan Banerjee has been a member of Rotary Club of Vapi since 1972. He was President of Rotary Club of Vapi during 1975-76.
Kalyan became District Governor during 1980-81 of the Rotary District 306.
He served Rotary International as Director from Zone 5 and 6 in Asia during 1995-97 and in 1997-98 was General Coordinator of Poverty & Hunger Alleviation Task Force which got the program of low cost housing started from Rotary. He served as Trustee of The Rotary Foundation from 2001-2005. This is one of the world's largest charitable foundations focusing on education, service and peace, and nominated as President of Rotary International for the year 2011-12.
He has served as member of the International PolioPlus committee of Rotary International as well as on Rotary's Reach Out to Africa Initiative.
The Gnyan Dham High School, Haria Rotary Hospital, ROFEL Commerce and Arts College and C.D.Patel Gujarati Medium Technical School are a few of the permanent projects undertaken by Rotary Club of Vapi, which have changed the social fabric in this industrial town of South Gujarat. The Rotary Club Vapi and its trusts also run a full-fledged Science College, a Pharmacy College, A MCA program and a MBA program for Graduate Students, all through separate colleges. Kalyan was involved closely in their organization and in their running.
He has been involved in other activities in the community and elsewhere. These include membership of the American Chemical Society, Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, member of the Senate of the Vishva-Bharati University. He has been twice President of Vapi Industries Association in 2001 and is a past Chairman, Gujarat Council of Confederation of Indian Industry. He is a Trustee of several trusts such as Jai Research Foundation, Rotary Awards for Humanity Trust etc.
Kalyan is an avid reader and loves working for and with children. His hobbies which he shares with his wife, include yoga, pranayam and walking.
Kalyan is married to Binota, an active social worker and a member of Inner Wheel Vapi. They have a son - Kanishka, a Chemical Engineer with specialisation in Environmental Management, currently settled in Sydney, Australia and a daughter - Ruma, who has done her MBA and is currently settled with her husband, an I.T.Engineer, in Canada.
They have 4 grandchildren.
